Intel shows World's smallest SSD at CES 2008

Intel will show the world's smallest Solid State Disk (SSD) at the CES 2008 in January. The Intel Z-140 PATA SSD is smaller than a penny and lighter than a drop of water.

The Intel Z-P140 PATA SSD comes in 2GB and 4GB densities. The technology is extendable to 16GB.

Intel targets next generation mobile devices with their new tiny SSD. Another size comparison that might help to sink it in how small this new flash storage drive is: It is 400x smaller than a 1.8" hard-drive.

The measurements of the Intel Z-P140 are 12x18x1.8mm and the weight is 0.6g. Read data throughput is 40MB/s and write data throughput is 30MB/s.

Beyond iPhone, Gadgets led Year's mobile Developments

DENVER (Billboard) - The 2007 mobile music market could be summed up in one phrase: "It's the device, stupid."

And though no mobile music service or associated innovation gained even a fraction of the attention that Apple did by unveiling the iPhone, that story certainly helped shine a spotlight on other mobile music developments, if only by means of comparison. And believe it or not, there were other milestones in mobile music throughout the year.

AT&T finally joined competitors Sprint and Verizon Wireless by launching its own full-song music download services. Its strategy is one of partnership, tapping eMusic and Napster to create mobile versions of their digital music services so users can buy individual tracks or track bundles directly from their phones. The operator also became the exclusive U.S. provider of the iPhone, which sold more than 1 million units in less than three months.

Rhapsody got into the mobile game as well. After absorbing MTV's Urge, the company struck a deal with Verizon Wireless that made Rhapsody the exclusive platform to deliver tracks purchased from the VCast Music service. Through time, Rhapsody and Napster hope to apply a wireless all-you-can-eat subscription model to their plans.

TRYING TO RING IN SALES

This year also saw a resumed push on ringtones, with operators spending big bucks on exclusive deals with big-name acts in hopes of goosing a stalling market. Verizon led the way, landing such big-ticket names as AC/DC, Bob Marley and Led Zeppelin. AT&T landed a few punches as well, ending the year with exclusives from Dave Matthews Band and Matchbox Twenty.

But from its initial flashy unveiling to the lines of people camping out for a device that didn't even sell out, to the inevitable backlash when Apple cut the price by $200 just 70 days after it went on sale for $600, the iPhone dominated every mobile music discussion. And it will continue to do so for months to come.

Meanwhile, other handset manufacturers are now pulling out the stops:

* NOKIA N95: The N95, Nokia's flagship smart phone, supports MP3, WMA, RealAudio and several other digital music formats, and also contains an FM radio tuner. Its Bluetooth feature enables audio to stream to other speakers, it can access the Internet through built-in Wi-Fi, and European models feature Nokia's new Ovi digital entertainment service and music store, and an 8 GB internal flash storage capacity. No U.S. carriers sell the device yet, but U.S. fans can get an unlocked version directly from Nokia.

* HTC Touch: A full-screen, touch-navigation wireless phone that runs Windows Mobile version 6, the Touch features HTC's TouchFLO interface. Sprint offers the product exclusively in the United States. The Touch features direct access to the Sprint Music Store, as well as video services, Outlook e-mail and streaming radio stations. A microSD card slot offers up to 4 GB of removable memory.

* LG Voyager: Known in Europe as the Prada phone because of a branding relationship there, the new Voyager from LG one-ups the competition by featuring two screens -- a 2.8-inch touch-screen display on the face and a smaller screen when flipped open above a Qwerty keyboard. It plays MP3, WMA, AAC and all other digital music formats. A microSD card slot supports up to 8 GB of memory. It's available exclusively via Verizon and supports all the operator's VCast multimedia services.

* Samsung F700: The Ultra Smart-branded multimedia phone features a touch-screen interface and a full Qwerty slide-out keyboard. It uses a drag-and-drop navigation feature that makes it easier to search for specific content, like music. It lacks any significant onboard memory, but has a microSD memory slot for up to 4 GB. Rumored to be coming to Verizon this Christmas under the name U940.

* Sony Ericsson W960: The W960 is the Walkman version of a touch-screen phone but with a normal dialing keypad. The 8 GB device has a 2.8-inch display, 3.2 megapixel camera and Wi-Fi for Web browsing. It supports MP3 and AAC. An optional charger desk stand includes speakers. Not yet available in the United States.

Sony Cybershot DSC-T200 Digital Camera

The Sony Cybershot DSC-T200 Digital Camera features: 8.1-megapixel, 3.5″ LCD screen, Face detection, 5x optical zoom, Image stabilization, 31MB of internal memory. Spyker Exotic Cars at the LA Auto Show

Before the LA Auto Show I wasn’t familiar with Spyker and its line of exotic sports cars, but boy am I familiar now. Spyker was nestled in between Bentley, Lamborghini and Aston Martin at the show and I found Spyker’s rides to be more appealing than many of the others on display.

Some of the Spyker cars had a weird rear end that I didn’t care for that was very large and rounded. To my eyes, it didn't fit in too well with the angular, sculpted lines on the other parts of the car.

One of the Spyker concept

cars
reminded me of the Batmobile from the original 60’s Bat Man show. These cars aren’t practical, but man were they cool looking. You can see from the tiny trunk you won’t be driving on vacation in the beast with more than a swimsuit and a small duffle bag.

Dodge Avenger Stormtrooper Concept at the LA Auto Show

Dodge had a very cool concept/custom car called the Dodge Avenger Stormtrooper. This car was done up in pearl white paint, white wheels and black accents and paid homage to the Star Wars Stormtrooper in its color scheme.

The car was very cool to look at and the interior was fantastic. Crammed inside were a couple touch screens, custom seating surfaces with bucket seats in the front and back as well as a rear LCD screen and a video game system.

There was no information offered on the Stormtrooper as far as performance specifications and power outputs. I assume from the lack of any information on the car, it is running a stock Avenger power train. Still this is one cool concept that would look good sitting in your driveway.

Sony PS3 outsells Nintendo Wii in Japan, but not in U.S.

The Sony PS3 is now one year on the market in the United States. At the same time Sony reached an important milestone in their home turf by surpassing the Nintendo Wii last week in sales.

The price-cut, the new white and black 40GB PS3 consoles and the new Dualshock 3 controllers can be named as reasons for the sales spur.

In the United States the Nintendo Wii is still in the lead by a sizable margin. The Wii sold about 519,000 units during October and the Sony PS3 only 121,000 times.

More details on the Japanese PS3 sales numbers on GamesDailyBiz. More details on the U.S. PS3 sales numbers on the WSJ.

Nissan’s ‘Godzilla’ finally breaks cover allover

They're finally here, pictures of the “Godzilla” we’ve waited seven years for. In less than two decades, the Skyline GT-R has achieved cult status. The new GT-R, soon to be officially unveiled at the upcoming Tokyo Motor Show, will no doubt be a show-stopper and a worthy successor to the GT-R badge.

The evolutionary changes to the exterior (R32 through to the R34) have been done away with, and the new car features its own aggressive coupé body style. The production vehicle is expected to share more that 80 per cent of the GT-R Proto concept’s styling cues, such as 20-inch wheels and blacked out A-pillars.

Inside the GT-R, Nissan has spent a great amount of time on the aesthetic details. Although the GT-R’s interior does look quite “busy” with all those buttons, switches and steering wheel-mounted controls, it is actually nice mix of black plastic, black leather and satin-finish metallic trim. Even with that sloping roofline, there appears to be adequate space for the rear-seated passengers and there is even a hint of previous Nissan design a la the fifth generation 200 SX aping rear bench, making this a genuine 2+2 seater.

The near-bullet-proof RB26 DETT straight-six engine found in the GT-R Skylines of yore had a reputation of being able to withstand hurricane forces of 700-plus kW, making the R32, R33 and R34 very popular with drag racers and tuners.

For the upcoming GT-R, Nissan has opted to ditch the legendary 2,6-litre engine, however. The new GT-R should gain some displacement courtesy of Nissan’s acclaimed VQ V6 engine (with a reported capacity of over 3,5-litres). What’s more, the new engine is assisted by twin-turbochargers, fine-tuned by Cosworth, and produces 353 kW and 588 N.m of torque.

Nissan’s electronically controlled, all wheel-drive system, known as Advanced Total Traction Engineering System for All- Electronic Torque Split (there’s no acronym for that one, as far as we know), is also expected to receive a bit of tweaking. The GT-R may also be the recipient of an all-wheel steering system known as HICAS. What is known, is that Lotus has lent its expertise to the development of the GT-R’s suspension and handling characteristics, and given the enviable track record the Hethel-based firm has with sports cars, that can only be a good thing.

The new GT-R will not feature a seven-speed automatic transmission, as was speculated in a number of earlier reports. Instead, a six-speed dual-clutch gearbox dubbed the GR6 will undertake the shifting duties. An automatic version is likely to be offered as an option, but our guess is that most GT-R owners will choose to swap cogs manually via the centrally mounted shifter or leather and aluminium paddle shifters. With this transmission set up, the GT-R will sprint from zero to 100 km/h in 3,5 seconds, crosses out a quarter mile in just 11,7 seconds and runs out of steam at 309 km/h.

This Japanese supercar is highly anticipated in automotive circles and once again looks well set to take on the likes of its Western competitors, such as the Audi R8, Porsche 911 GT2, and Corvette Z06. The production version of the GT-R will officially break cover at the Tokyo Show next week - we can’t wait!

Logitech unveils Innovative Harmony Remotes and Streaming Music Systems in India

Logitech just unveiled a number of products in the home entertainment market in India. Gracing the event with her elegance was Soha Ali Khan. The products unveiled are the Logitech Harmony universal remotes and sound music streaming systems.

The Logitech universal remote line-up include the Harmony Remote 1000, Harmony 885 and Harmony 525.

Soha who was obviously smitten by the innovativeness of Logitech’s products said, “Everything’s going digital. It’s really difficult to imagine a home without these Logitech products in the near future. I had seen Harmony 1000 when I was traveling in the US earlier this year and have wanted to get my hands on it. It’s really cool. I can get rid of all my other remotes!”

UK PS3 drops price, 40GB finally official

Sony makes two big announcements for its UK customers in a pre-Christmas bid to boost PS3 sales; revised hardware loses PS2 backwards compatibility.
One of the worst kept secrets in the games industry has finally been officially announced. After a flurry of rumours and leaks that a new 40GB SKU of the PlayStation 3 would be coming, Sony has finally confirmed the speculation is, in fact, no longer speculation.

The new 40GB version will debut in the UK on October 10 and is "no longer backwards compatible with PlayStation 2 titles," according to Sony. It will also only sport two USB slots instead of four and will ditch the multimemory card port--although this can be added on with an accessory. The 40GB version will go on sale at a price point of £299 (about $610).

In a statement, Sony said of the lack of backwards compatibility that it reflected, "both the reduced emphasis placed on this feature amongst later purchasers of PS3, as well as the availability of a more extensive lineup of PS3-specific titles."

When asked about PSOne games, Sony told GameSpot, "the backwards compatibility of PSOne titles is achieved through software and the vast majority of PSOne titles are backwards compatible with the new PS3." Sony did not return calls to comment by press time on why PlayStation 2 compatibility--which has always been handled with software in European PS3s--could not be achieved with the new model as well.

That's not all UK Sony fans are getting for the holidays. Sony also announced a price drop on the standard 60GB version, which will continue to be sold alongside the new model. The current Starter Pack, which boasted a 60GB PS3, two first-party games, and two Sixaxis controllers, will be discontinued.

It will be replaced by the new Value Pack, which will feature a backwards compatible 60GB PS3, one Sixaxis wireless controller, two first-party titles, and will cost £349 (about $712)--a £76 (about $155) price drop from the current price of £425 (about $868).

"As we approach our very first PlayStation Christmas, it is satisfying to be able to offer UK consumers the choice of two PlayStation 3 packages both now representing remarkable value," commented Ray Maguire, managing director of Sony Computer Entertainment UK.

Like most DVD receivers, JVC's KD-AVX1 plays your DVDs, standard CDs, MP3s, and WMAs. But here's the best part: Giga MP3 technology lets you load up to 100 hours of your favorite MP3s or WMAs on a single recordable DVD, and the JVC KD-AVX1 will play them.

**Calculations are based on 900MB per MPEG-4 (DivX®) movie, 1MB per JPEG photo file, and 3MB per MP3 song. These values often vary.

Asus intros U1E ultra-portable laptop

We just caught sight of three new Asus laptops, but it looks like that's not all the company has up its sleeve, with its ultra-portable U1E model now also making its first appearance। This one boasts an even smaller form factor than the company's just-announced 12.1-inch, 3.3 pound U6S laptop, in this case shrinking things down to an 11.1-inch WXGA display and a mere 2.2 pound carrying weight (albeit with only a 3 cell battery). Otherwise, you'll get an Intel Core Duo ULV7500 processor, up to 2GB of RAM, a 100GB hard drive, and built-in WiFi and Bluetooth, with an external DVD burner thrown in for good measure. A nine cell battery is also available for those that actually want to get some work done, with it apparently promising upwards of six hours of running time. Look for this one to be available next month, in Italy at least, for €1,999 (or $2,844).

Price: US$1,299 (

Apple iMac: New Look & New Specs, Starts At $1,199

The Pretty

The most obvious cosmetic changes are the inclusion of black and the change from plastic to aluminum and glass. Following the style of the iPhone, the new iMac sports a black bezel and a black Apple logo on its silver aluminum exterior.

The new keyboard is equally sweet! With a super-low profile compared to the previous model, it provides a more laptop-like typing experience. It comes in wired and wireless versions, with the wired offering two USB ports and the wireless having a sleek power button at the side.

The tech specs are just as amazing। 2.8GHz Core 2 Extreme processor, ATI Radeon HD 2600 Pro graphics, support for up to 1TB of storage, 802.11n, Bluetooth 2.0, 8x SuperDrives, and 1GB of RAM.

I’m now truly appreciative of environmental friendly products. I’m glad that Apple is now emphasizing on this aspect, and the new iMacs are made out of highly recyclable materials.

The Ugly

My first disappointment is that there isn’t a new 30-inch model. I thought it would be fitting. It would’ve made me really think of upgrading!

And no Blu-ray or HD-DVD? It’s not even available as an upgrade. This could turn away some people who are ready to jump onto the HD bandwagon. But then again, this can be easily solved with an external drive.

Price

20-inch: US$1,199
20-inch with processor, HDD and graphics upgrade: US$1,499
24-inch: US$1,799
24-inch with processor and HDD upgrade: US$2,299

That’s a $300 price drop for the entry 20-inch model! As for the 24-inch model, Apple was quoted saying it’s a $200 price drop. But, if you look at the price comparison pictured here, you’ll know that feature-by-feature the new iMacs is much more desirable. If you upgrade the previous range to similar specs, you’ll come up with a price drop of more than $600!

There is no better time than now to get yourself an iMac.

You can buy a used Robocco for $799 with shipping fee of $99 from CScout Japan. It also comes with instructions in English in case you don’t read Japanese.

New Samsung SGH-E590 designed by Jasper Morrison

Samsung partnered with industrial designer Jasper Morrison to create the SGH-E590 mobile phone.

The stylish E590 comes in simple contours and clean lines which comprise this compact bar design. Jasper Morrison put one side phone keypad and LCD screen while the other side is outfitted with dedicated camera functions, which is not really something new.
The design of the SGH-E590 is a bit too old-fashioned for my taste. The highlight of the phone is the 3MP camera with auto focus, half shutter and panorama shot.
Other features of the E590 include 1.79 inch screen with 220x220px resolution, Bluetooth 2.0, 90MB internal memory and GPRS Class 10 / EDGE / Tri-Band (900/1800/1900) connectivity.
Measurements of the E590 are 94x42x13.5mm and the weight is 66g.

“The SGH-E590 is a very pragmatic work of art that reflects the synergy between Samsung and Jasper Morrison. We have teamed up to satisfy our users with high-performance technology and emotional design.” says Geesung Choi, President of Samsung’s Telecommunication Network business. He added, “Through the partnership with renowned designers, Samsung will strengthen our design power to bring design excellence to our customers.”

The Samsung E590 is available in two colors, noble black and snow silver, and will be launched in Europe, China and South East Asia in June.

Sony Offers a 100GB HDD Camcorder

Today being my first day back to work after a vacation, I can attest that camcorders that use tapes are a pain in the rear. They are a pain when you have to change tapes at the beach, they are a pain when the wife complains for the next six months that you haven’t put the videos on DVD yet.

Sony’s latest HD camcorder is called the HDR-SR5C and it packs a large 100GB HDD inside so no tapes are needed. The camcorder also has a 10x optical zoom along with an 80x digital zoom.

The CMOS sensor is a 2.1 MP ClearVid unit with 1990K effective pixels. I particularly like the idea of the Smooth Slow recording feature that allows you to increase the record rate from 60 fps to 240fps for three seconds and play the video back in 12 seconds. A built in USB 2.0 interface makes it east to send the video to your PC for burning to DVD or storing on your PC via included software. Via Sony Style

Nokia N76 - Thin and Smart

Nokia introduced their first Symbian S60 folder phone more than a year ago, and since then they have been trying to trim its size. The result is the new N76 that they put forward this year. Thanks to Nokia Hong Kong, we had the chance to check out the final production model of the N76 before it's widely available.

Physical Aspects

The N76 is probably not the most attractive phone out there, but you've got to say that it is sleek. Design wise it seems to have everything that the market likes today: an external display that hides behind a mirrored finish, a row of backlighted music buttons on the front, and a metallic finish around the buttons and camera on the back. The thing is, they just don't look right when put together.

The N76 measures 106.5mm x 53mm x 13.7mm (4.2" x 2.1" x .5") in size, which makes it thin for a folder by both smartphone and non-smartphone standards. Because of its thinness, the N76 is very pocket friendly. At 53mm in width, though, it might be a bit wide for smaller hands.

The N76's antenna is located in the bulge below the keypad, which is not visually appealing to all. On the bottom of the phone you can find a strap hole for charms or a lanyard, as well as the speaker. Don't get fooled by the fact that the speaker grille is divided down the middle - the fact is that there is only one speaker, so there is no stereo. There are benefits to having the speaker located on the bottom of the phone, as opposed to the back, since it will be easier to hear when it rings in a pants pocket.

On the left side you will find a microSD slot behind a fairly sturdy flap. Above it is the unprotected mini Nokia charging port. I find that a bit worrying as dust will surely get in. The camera shutter, multimedia shortcut key, and the volume buttons are found on the right side.

The 3.5mm earphone jack and the miniUSB port are put right next to the power button on the top. The piece of black rubber that covers the miniUSB port does not fit in with the rest of the design at all, especially since our review model is made of red plastic. We expect it would look less awkward on the black version. Putting design aside, there is still one glaring mistake that Nokia made here. It is surely a great idea to put the earphone jack on the top so that it'll be easier to manage in the pocket. But the big problem is that the N76 cannot be opened fully when the headphones are in, since the line will simply jam the flip, preventing it from fully opening. The good thing is that there are music keys on the phone's exterior, and the external screen user interface is capable of much, something we will go into more details about later.

Nokia goes slim: the 2630 ----85 Euros ($115)--RS 4500-4600

We all know Nokia phones are usually pretty conservative in design, with solid features and constant interface design. They’ve only had a few outlandish designs, mostly concerning keyboards, but now they’re heading down the new (and mainstream) route.

Looking pretty good for an entry-level handset, the 2630 is only 9,9mm thick (in good Nokia tradition: that means it’s 9,9mm at its thickest spot).

The phone will cost about 85 Euros ($115) and will sport a camera of yet unknown megapixels, Bluetooth connectivity, a FM radio and mp3 ringtones.

The presence of e-mail, MMS and a calendar, together with the looks of the device, hint to the presence of the series 40 v3 interface, which would also be a first in this price class

Also, the phone’s already been approved by the FCC. It might not be long before Nokia announces it.
